Link Love: Part 3

Link Love {a mission} click HERE

For a recap, Tammy Garcia from “Daisy Yellow” started a mission to spread love via blogging this month. I love her idea, "to give virtual hugs to our fellow creative bloggers."

I have joined in and will be posting a set of 5 or more links once each week for the month of April. Here is a link to my first post in this series and the second.

You can read all about the Link Love {a mission} HERE.

Here are five bloggers that have caught my eye this week:

Karen at Midwest Maude is eying some wonderfully vintage goodies!

Dion Dior is working on some beautiful floral paintings as well as pondering self-understanding.

Erin at Treasures Found crafted an amazing faux fused glass necklace.

Natasha White is blogging about an extremely busy week that consisted of parades, museum visits, using watercolors, and sewing beautiful prayer flags and lighting fires in the fireplace.

Chrissie from Krishenka's Vintage Treasures shows us some amazing, hand-sewn smocking.

Like Mother, Like Son

Top: in progress. Bottom: some of the completed pages.
My nine-year-old son, Liam was home sick from school today. He has seen many of my art journal pages, including one about our dog, Daisy. She is his favorite family member!

So, today he asked if he could make some journal pages of his own that focus on his favorite canine. I did not have to do much instruction- just explaining how to glue down the background paper. Then, he was off, creating his own designs.

He says he would like to do more and then put them all in a book.

21 Secrets Workshop

My two-page spread from Danielle Daniel's workshop.

I have been very busy learning all I can about art journaling from the 21 Secrets online workshop (hosted by Dirty Footprints Studio). This consists of 21, amazing online video courses. Each focuses on a different aspect of art journaling and/or different techniques.

You can see an example of my work above. I have completed three sessions and am looking forward to more, more, more.

Here are five bloggers that have caught my eye this week.

Carol is creating beautiful bird paintings as well as photographing nature on A Creative Harbor.

Paisley and Brown Paper is taking her first stab at collage, and she does a great job with butterfly tags.

A great mixed media cityscape is occupying Boo at Stamp Laugh Play. I love the textured areas below the skyline.

Jana from Tangled Pen has this wonderful idea where she sends art mail everywhere. This includes wonderfully decorated envelopes as well as the art itself.

A very Steampunk styled birdhouse clock was completed by The Gentleman Crafter. I love the detail of the small, metal bird perched near the opening.

Age Old Reads

After a slightly depressing dental exam, where I was told I will need a crown, I stopped by Decatur Estate and Way Back Antiques because they are very close to my dentist and I thought browsing might cheer me up a bit.

Most sellers are in the middle of a big moving sale because they are moving to Lawrenceville Highway. I discovered that their big book seller is having a crazy, 60% off sale! We are talking about many antique, and first edition books.  This means lots of vintage or antique illustrations on the pages within.

I picked up three books I want to use for collage or other forms of mixed media (like resin jewelry).

Antique spelling and antique Currier and Ives books.

"New" fashions!

I love the writing in this antique spelling primer:

Classic Currier and Ives.

Look at these adorable fairy houses crafted by Anne at A Little Fur in the Paint.

Finally, Sheila is knitting up a storm (don't you love the color?) at Creative Design by Sheila.

Encaustic Paint and Art Journaling

As you may recall, I am completely obsessed with art journals. I read Art Journal Workshop by Traci Bunkers, and I have begun following Tammy Garcia's posts at Daisy Yellow. In my newly started journal,  I have been combining traditional journaling techniques like collage, acrylics, stamping, and so forth with encaustic paint.

A more traditional art journal page featuring slightly funky photos, of our dog Daisy, acrylics, vintage ephemera photos, and collage techniques.

Traditional collage techniques lightly covered with encaustic paints.
I have also became fascinated with encaustic painting and how I can break the rules of using a firm surface in favor of wax on paper. You can see some brief YouTube clips of me testing out encaustic paints on different papers here.

Encaustic Art on Paper

In an earlier blog post, I mentioned a growing fascination with Encaustic painting. I especially wanted to try it out on paper that I could then use as part of an art journal. I purchased Encaustic+Paper  from Waxworks West.

I made a series of videos and posted them to YouTube to show how the different papers and brushes I used worked for me.
