My son, Liam, went on a school field trip there earlier in the week and became a little obsessed with it. So, he really wanted us to see it.

Could I ask for a better combination? I think not.

The first half of the Of Towers and Turrets workshop focuses on the mixed media/collage elements. We eventually use these skills to create collage images that we encase into hand crafted pendants. This will include making our own bezels- a technique I have been very curious about learning.

After choosing an image and cutting it to size, I sandwich it between glass and wrap it in copper foil tape. I brush on gel flux, and then use a soldering iron and solder to create a framed metal charm.

It involves sandwiching an image between two pieces of glass, lining that glass with copper foil, and then using a soldering iron to seal the copper. I love the look of these types of charms and pendants and was very curious about trying to construct one.

Hovering a few degrees above freezing, and rainy. On days like this, when mother nature seems indecisive, I would just prefer snow. As a result, my upper back went out (I am prone to periodic back problems). I finally think I got the hang of clear epoxy resin! And it took me only a month. I had to fill these both with a small amount of resin first to close their open backs and let that part cure. Trust me, this is not the easiest technique to learn. However, by my 500th time, I figured out better how to moderate the flow of resin with a craft stick. I have spent the past two days playing with two-part resin. I have been busily mixing, pouring, and adding inclusions in various ways. I have embedded a cross in a heart mold; domed an image from a Holy Card; and am closing the back of a bezel before adding a Milagros charm to it.

They are located in Avondale Estates, very close to me. I am not sure why I haven’t stopped by before, other than trying to spare my wallet. The store makes the most of its boutique sized square footage, and there is a nice mix of bead types. I liked that they also have a nice selection of vintage beads and findings.

I made this necklace for my mother. I modified the design from a project in Stringing Magazine (Summer 2011). 

I used vintage chain from the 1960s, a repurposed strand of pearls, and recycled silk sari ribbon. I created a pendant from a vintage earring by removing the clip on back and wire wrapping it.

I won a huge amount of beading books from Jewelry By Jeannie. The one I wanted to read first was The Impatient Beader: Easy Jewelry Projects for the Busy Beginner.  Boy did this title speak to me! I tend to like to get things finished ASAP and love the idea of jewelry projects I can complete in a day.

I first scanned the images and backed them up online as well as on DVD.

I normally save up spare change and then, every month or two I take it to a coin sorting machine. I then use the money for splurge fun. Once this jar is full, I have a feeling I may just be using these funds toward jewelry making items.

It is called Kudzu Antique Market and it is just East of downtown Decatur.
It has some awesome items enclosed in its giant interior. I located a large pile of beads and jewelry findings in one stall.
